ABibleStudent- I haven't read Hassan's books, but believe me I have experience with the dual persona. My parents were unrecognizable during our arguments. They would be my normal loving parents until the JW were brought up, and then it was like I was talking to a different person.

jgnat- They never would have had an elder, because even when I was active I didn't think it was right for me to hold another person's life in my hands. THey tried to get me to go on shepherding calls with elders, and I flatly refused because I had no business counseling others.

for me it was when i learned that gb makes their decisions by 2/3 majority vote, not by direction of holy spirit..

There are too many to count for me. 607. Also learning about all the false predictions for armageddon made me realize it was nothing more than another religion, holy spirit not included.

I guess it shows how well they were able to sneak stuff past active JW. I didn't understand the full meaning of the new generation teaching until I came here. They just kinda whispered it at a convention one day, I thought that didn't make sense, then back to the treadmill.

Big difference from the rabid uncaring apostate stereotype I heard my whole life.

My decision was actually pretty easy once I saw how my friends disappeared overnight. I confessed my doubts to my best friend one night nearly in tears and the very next meeting no one would speak to me. I actually stood in the back of the hall as my friends would walk past me without even making eye contact. I decided right then and there that I didn't need them.

i am reading a book by victor sebestyn called "revolution 1989 - the fall of the soviet empire".

if you lived through the astonishing collapse of communism in the late '80s i highly recommend it.. what has struck me is the description of life under communism in the six soviet satellite states of east germany, poland, czechoslovakia, hungary, romania and bulgaria.. here is a couple of paragraphs that really stood out to me as a possible parallel to the current climate in the regime of jw.org.. ---------------------------------------------------------.

once idealism or revolutionary fervour had disappeared - certainly by the soviet invasion of czechosloakia in 1968 - the system stagnated.
